Honda to End Fuel Cell System Production at U.S. Joint Venture

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has announced its decision to discontinue production of its current fuel cell system at Fuel Cell System Manufacturing LLC (FCSM) in the United States before the end of 2026. Following this transition, Honda will move forward with a next-generation fuel cell system developed independently as part of its long-term hydrogen strategy.

FCSM, located in Brownstown, Michigan, was established in 2017 as a joint venture between Honda and General Motors. It was the automotive industry’s first manufacturing partnership dedicated specifically to fuel cell systems. Through this collaboration, the two companies combined expertise in development, production, and procurement, achieving advances in durability, low-temperature performance, production efficiency, and cost reduction.

After evaluating the future direction of the joint operation, Honda and GM agreed to conclude fuel cell system production at FCSM. Honda will now concentrate on leveraging its independently developed next-generation fuel cell technologies, positioning hydrogen as a key pillar of its future business growth.

Honda continues to pursue hydrogen and fuel cell development as part of its broader environmental strategy, which targets carbon neutrality across all products and corporate activities by 2050. Hydrogen, alongside electricity, remains a core energy carrier in Honda’s long-term vision, supported by more than three decades of research and development in fuel cell technologies.

This strategic shift is intended to strengthen Honda’s ability to expand its hydrogen business while advancing clean energy, resource circulation, and lifecycle sustainability initiatives worldwide.
