Audi Scales Up Artificial Intelligence Across Production Operations

Audi is accelerating the large-scale deployment of artificial intelligence across its global production and logistics operations, shifting from locally operated factory computers to a centralized cloud-based architecture and expanding AI use cases in series production. The initiative marks a major step in Audi’s transition toward fully networked, smart factories where AI actively supports employees, quality assurance, and operational efficiency.

At the core of this transformation is Audi’s Edge Cloud 4 Production (EC4P), a proprietary cloud platform that replaces stationary industrial PCs and local controllers with virtualized, cloud-based automation. By combining conventional automation technology with cloud computing power, EC4P enables faster deployment of new functions, reduced on-site hardware, improved IT security, and lower maintenance costs. More than 1,000 industrial PCs have already been eliminated across Audi’s German plants.

In Neckarsulm, EC4P is now operating for the first time in a highly automated large-scale body shop environment. Virtual programmable logic controllers (vPLCs) coordinate around 100 robots with millisecond precision, enabling the production of several hundred vehicle bodies per day across three shifts—setting a new benchmark for cloud-controlled automotive manufacturing.

AI improves ergonomics, quality, and process stability
Audi is also expanding AI applications that directly support employees and quality assurance. One example is its AI-based Weld Splatter Detection system, which identifies weld residue on vehicle underbodies and marks it visually. A recent upgrade allows robotic arms to automatically remove splatter, replacing a physically demanding manual task. The system will soon be deployed in series production at six Audi plants.

Another key development is ProcessGuardAIn, an in-house AI solution for real-time monitoring of manufacturing processes. Built on Audi’s cross-plant P-Data Engine platform, the system analyzes machine and sensor data to detect anomalies early and alert experts. Pilot applications are currently running in the Neckarsulm paint shop, with series production planned for the second quarter of 2026. Future versions will provide data-driven recommendations and support predictive maintenance across all plants.

Automation beyond the factory floor
Audi is also advancing end-to-end automation in complex assembly processes. Through the Next2OEM project, the company is demonstrating how wiring loom production and installation can be fully digitized and automated—from suppliers to final vehicle assembly. The approach significantly reduces logistical effort and shortens changeover times from weeks to minutes, with lessons learned feeding into future vehicle platforms.

Partnerships and responsible AI use
Audi’s AI roadmap is supported by partnerships with technology and research institutions, including Broadcom, Cisco, Siemens, and the Innovation Park Artificial Intelligence (IPAI) in Heilbronn. These collaborations accelerate the transfer of AI innovations into series production while giving Audi access to emerging technologies and talent.

At the same time, Audi emphasizes responsible AI deployment. Clear governance frameworks, including a company-wide AI policy and data-sharing code of practice, guide the ethical, secure, and transparent use of artificial intelligence across its production network.
