Trailer Battery Monitoring for Connected Fleets

Clarios has introduced Trailer Battery Manager, a connected service designed to provide real-time visibility into the health and charge status of low-voltage trailer batteries, addressing a long-standing data gap in fleet operations and cold-chain logistics.

Extending battery visibility from tractors to trailers
Fleet battery monitoring has historically focused on tractors, while trailers—despite powering liftgates, refrigeration units, and auxiliary systems—have remained largely unmonitored. Trailer Battery Manager expands Clarios’ Connected Services platform to include trailers, allowing fleet operators and maintenance managers to track the condition of all critical heavy-duty low-voltage batteries within a single digital supply chain interface.

The system continuously monitors battery charge levels and health indicators, enabling early detection of undercharged batteries or units approaching end-of-life. This reduces reliance on manual inspections and helps prevent operational disruptions that typically surface only when a liftgate fails or a delivery cannot be completed.

Technical relevance for cold-chain logistics
The technology is particularly relevant for temperature-controlled transport, where uninterrupted power is essential for trailer-mounted refrigeration units. In cold-chain logistics involving food or pharmaceuticals, battery degradation can compromise temperature stability and product integrity.

By providing real-time battery data, Trailer Battery Manager supports continuous operation of cooling systems and compliance with temperature requirements. This capability allows operators to intervene before power loss occurs, reducing the risk of spoiled goods and delivery failures in regulated transport environments.

Predictive alerts and measurable operational impact
Trailer Battery Manager generates alerts when battery charge levels fall below defined thresholds or when performance patterns indicate imminent end-of-life. These predictive mechanisms allow maintenance activities to be scheduled in advance rather than triggered by roadside failures.

According to Clarios, unplanned roadside assistance related to battery issues can exceed USD 700 per incident when accounting for service costs, delays, and penalties such as blocked loading dock fines. Early identification of battery issues helps fleets avoid these costs while improving asset availability and on-time delivery performance.

Data processing within the Connected Services platform
The new feature operates within the Clarios Connected Services platform, which processes battery data using cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning models. These models analyze usage patterns, charging behavior, and degradation trends to convert raw voltage and performance data into actionable maintenance insights.

Existing platform capabilities include idle reduction analytics and battery end-of-life prediction, and Trailer Battery Manager adds a trailer-specific data layer to this automotive data ecosystem. Together, these functions aim to improve maintenance planning accuracy and extend usable battery life without increasing operational risk.

Application scope and industry use cases
Trailer Battery Manager is designed for fleet operators in logistics, retail distribution, food and pharmaceutical transport, and other sectors relying on powered trailer equipment. Typical use cases include liftgate-equipped delivery fleets, refrigerated transport, and long-haul operations where trailers may remain stationary for extended periods and experience gradual battery discharge.

By integrating trailer battery data into centralized fleet dashboards, operators gain a more complete operational picture, supporting data-driven decisions across vehicles, trailers, and maintenance workflows.
