Valeo, Kapsch Demonstrate V2X-Based Real-Time Tolling
The partners validate SAE J3217-based V2X tolling, enabling secure, automated toll transactions between vehicles and roadside infrastructure.

Valeo and Kapsch TrafficCom have formed a strategic partnership to develop and demonstrate a next-generation vehicle-to-everything (V2X) tolling system that enables real-time, automated toll transactions without physical tolling interfaces.
The solution will be demonstrated live at the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) meeting in Sacramento, California, from February 2–5. The demonstration uses a Valeo autonomous vehicle equipped with a Cellular-V2X (C-V2X) onboard unit communicating directly with a Kapsch roadside unit (RSU).
Technically, the system is based on PC5 direct communications using the emerging SAE J3217 standard, enabling the vehicle to initiate and complete toll transactions automatically as it approaches a tolling point. Secure, bidirectional messages are exchanged between the vehicle and roadside infrastructure, compiled into a complete transaction record, and finalized through the tolling backend. Security and credential management are provided by a Microsec system to ensure data integrity and privacy.
By leveraging V2X communication rather than dedicated RFID tags or camera-based systems, the approach allows tolling agencies to layer digital tolling capabilities onto existing infrastructure, potentially reducing deployment and operating costs. For drivers, tolling status and payment information can be presented directly through the vehicle’s in-dash interface, supporting a frictionless user experience.
The partners position the demonstration as a step toward interoperable, standards-based tolling systems that can coexist with current technologies while preparing road networks for connected and automated vehicles.
