Micro-Epsilon Enables Automated 3D Bodyshell Inspection

In automotive body-in-white manufacturing, consistent surface quality is critical before painting and final assembly. Micro-Epsilon’s surfaceCONTROL Automotive is a robot-guided 3D inspection system that uses fringe projection technology and learning-based evaluation to detect dents, bulges and local geometry deviations with high repeatability in fully automated production environments.

Automated defect detection for automotive production
Designed for automotive OEMs and body manufacturers, the system inspects diffusely reflective metal surfaces using high-resolution 3D sensors. By projecting structured light patterns and analyzing their deformation, the system captures precise surface geometry data.

A learning process establishes a digital reference model, enabling reliable detection of local defects such as dents, bulges or notches. The solution achieves a surface coverage of ≥97%, including edge regions, styling lines and highly curved geometries such as door handle recesses. Defects on sanded or pre-treated body surfaces are also identified with high reliability.

This coverage level allows bodyshells classified as defect-free to proceed directly to the paint shop without manual visual inspection, improving throughput and reducing inspection variability.

Standardized processes for series production
For stable integration into automated production lines, the system includes CAD-based simulation for defining sensor positions and robot motion paths. Integrated 6D offset correction compensates for positional deviations of the bodyshell, ensuring repeatable inspection results.

Flexible parameterization enables adaptation to new body models or deployment across multiple plants. This standardization supports scalable implementation in high-volume series production.

3D-based evaluation and quality integration
Beyond hardware, surfaceCONTROL Automotive includes a comprehensive software platform for 3D surface evaluation.

A Digital Master is generated from reference parts without defects. Inspection results can be visualized using Digital Stone and Digital Light Tunnel environments to simulate realistic surface evaluation scenarios.

Each detected defect is evaluated using real 3D measurement data, assigning quantifiable parameters such as diameter, area and height. Classification is performed according to user-defined tolerance thresholds. All results are exported in XML format for integration into existing quality assurance systems.

When combined with reflectCONTROL Automotive in the paint shop, the system enables a continuous inspection concept across the entire automotive body manufacturing process.
