DS Smith Tecnicarton Launches Fibre-Based Chassis Packaging

DS Smith Tecnicarton, part of International Paper, has introduced a 100% fibre-based automotive chassis packaging solution designed to support manufacturers and suppliers across automotive supply chains.

Developed for the automotive tier supplier sector in Iberia, the new solution offers a mono-material alternative to traditional reusable metal packaging, improving flexibility while maintaining performance standards for heavy-duty components.

Fibre-based alternative to metal packaging
The packaging system is constructed entirely from corrugated cardboard, forming a robust and recyclable structure that includes:
  • A box pallet folding system
  • Main body and supporting base
  • Protective cover
  • Replaceable positioners and internal dividers
Positioners placed at the base and upper sides ensure that automotive chassis components remain secure during transport, while custom inserts optimize space utilization.

Despite being fibre-based, the solution meets technical and performance requirements comparable to metal alternatives, while offering significant advantages in weight and handling.

Designed for flexible and resilient supply chains
The lightweight design improves ease of handling, storage, and transportation, whether by road or sea. As a mono-material solution, it is fully recyclable without the need for material separation, supporting circular economy principles.

Antonio Cebrián, Cluster SMI Manager Tecnicarton Southwest EMEA at DS Smith Tecnicarton, said:

“Our large dimensional and sustainable innovation for the protection of automotive chassis was created in conjunction with a major automotive tier supplier in response to supply chain challenges around their existing metal-based and reusable packaging. Our solution ensures continuity of production while remaining lightweight and easy to manoeuvre.”

Ensuring continuity in disrupted supply chains
Traditional automotive logistics often rely on returnable metal containers, which circulate between suppliers and OEM facilities. However, disruptions such as transport delays, production interruptions, or component shortages can interrupt these cycles.

The fibre-based packaging solution provides a quickly deployable alternative, enabling manufacturers to maintain operations until standard packaging flows are restored.

It is also designed for direct-to-line delivery, allowing seamless integration into existing production and assembly processes without additional repacking or handling.

Recognized innovation in sustainable packaging
The Fibre-Based Automotive Chassis Packaging Solution has received industry recognition, including:
  • Liderpack Award (2023)
  • WorldStar Global Packaging Award (2024) in the Transit category
These awards highlight its successful collaboration with Gestamp Metalbages, part of the Gestamp Group.

Supporting circular economy goals
DS Smith Tecnicarton continues to advance its sustainability strategy, Redefining Packaging for a Changing World, focusing on circular solutions that reduce waste and improve resource efficiency.

The new fibre-based chassis packaging demonstrates how innovative material design can enhance logistics performance while supporting environmental goals across the automotive industry.
