Commercial vehicle original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) face operational demands to reduce total cost of ownership, lower carbon emissions, and comply with safety regulations such as General Safety Regulation II (GSR2). Meeting these requirements requires multi-system integration across power distribution, sensor networks, structural seating, and high-pressure fuel storage. To address these demands, FORVIA Faurecia and FORVIA HELLA operate an integrated development and product management organization that combines power electronics, interior structures, lighting, and alternative powertrain storage into single-platform solutions.
Technical Architecture and Operational Responsibilities
The combined technical architecture covers five main functional areas, divided between electrical, structural, and energy storage domains.
Power Distribution and Sensing
FORVIA HELLA develops the electronic hardware, including 77 GHz radar platforms for vehicle and pedestrian detection across automated driving levels. Power management is handled via an Intelligent Power Distribution Module (iPDM) using solid-state electronic fuses (eFuses) to support fail-operational power supplies for safety-critical systems. Additional power electronics include High Voltage DC/DC converters, Intelligent Battery Sensors, and camera-and-radar interior monitoring systems (DMS/OMS) designed for GSR2 compliance. A digital e-Mirror Camera Monitoring System replaces physical mirrors to reduce aerodynamic drag.
Zero-Emission Hydrogen Storage
FORVIA Faurecia supplies 2nd generation Type IV carbon-composite hydrogen cylinders certified under UN R134.02 regulations. The 700-bar portfolio includes a 329-liter rear-of-cab tank holding over 13.2 kg of hydrogen and a 563-liter wheelbase-integrated tank storing 22.7 kg. For municipal bus applications, a 350-bar, 229-liter cylinder provides 5.5 kg of storage capacity.
Structural Seating and Lightweight Interiors
FORVIA Faurecia manufactures heavy-duty seating built on a single metal platform featuring upper backrest adjustment (UBA) and integrated seatbelt assemblies (Belt-in-Seat). Lightweight interior components utilize Microject injection moulding to reduce polypropylene part mass by up to 20 percent, alongside post-consumer recycled polypropylene (IniCycled) and natural-fiber-reinforced polymers (NAFILean) with up to 20 percent biomass content.
Adaptive Cabin Lighting
FORVIA HELLA integrates RGB ambient lighting modules into interior surfaces. These modules interface with vehicle telemetry to provide visual safety alerts and status indications directly to the driver.
Implementation and Field Testing
The integrated components are engineered on modular platforms to allow direct installation into global heavy-duty truck, coach, and city bus architectures. The systems are designed for local-for-local manufacturing across production facilities in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. FORVIA Faurecia and FORVIA HELLA will showcase these technologies from September 14 to 20, 2026, at IAA Transportation in Hanover, Germany (Hall 12, Stand 36).
