Agritechnica: Rolls-Royce to show sustainable microgrid solutions and drive systems for agricultural applications

Microgrids – tomorrow's agriculture power supply systems of choice.

Agritechnica: Rolls-Royce to show sustainable microgrid solutions and drive systems for agricultural applications
- Modern MTU engines meet strict emissions limits

Rolls-Royce is to present low-emission drive and power solutions under its core brand MTU for the agricultural sector at the world's leading agriculture machinery trade fair, Agritechnica, in Hanover, Germany. EU Stage V certified MTU engines will be in the spotlight at booth C 29 in Hall 16 between 10 and 16 November. Another focus lays on microgrid solutions which combine renewable energy sources and battery storage systems with natural gas-powered generator sets.

“At Agritechnica, we use the opportunity to showcase low-emission MTU engines to our customers and, for the first time, our enhanced portfolio of microgrid solutions which offer sustainable, reliable and efficient energy solutions,” explained Michael Kempf, team lead Agriculture Sales at Rolls-Royce's Power Systems division.

Sustainable power supplies

Microgrids are a major step forward in creating climate-friendly, decentralized power supplies with lower CO2 output: they combine renewable energy – e.g. from solar panels and wind generators – with energy supply from natural gas and diesel-powered gensets, all linked to power storage hardware in the form of battery systems. Key elements of a microgrid are the battery storage system (MTU EnergyPack) and the microgrid control system developed by Rolls-Royce. This intelligent power management system optimizes the use of energy from various sources both technically and economically.

With many photovoltaic systems and biogas plants available, agricultural businesses in particular are ideally suited when it comes to implement microgrid technology. When being combined with battery containers and intelligent control systems to form a microgrid, these systems become ultra-efficient and offer major cost benefits.

EU Stage V emission limits for agricultural and forestry vehicles

At Agritechnica, Rolls-Royce will also showcase its EU Stage V certified MTU engines for harvesters and other agricultural and forestry vehicles. Its Series 1000, 1100, 1300 and 1500 engines received their certificates of compliance with EU Stage V emission requirements in March 2018 and have been available as serial engines since June 2018.

Based on Daimler commercial vehicle engines, the MTU engines offer a power range of 115 to 480 kW. Exhaust values fall below new emissions regulation thanks to internal engine enhancements and by adding an SCR system as well as an additional diesel particulate filter. Besides reduced CO2 emissions, torque, performance and fuel consumption of the engines have all been improved.

After nearly 110,000 hours of field testing, the first MTU Stage V engines have already been shipped to customers such as Claas, Agco Fendt, Grimme, Same Deutz-Fahr and Ponsse, destined for a wide variety of applications. The engines are displayed both at the Rolls-Royce booth at Agritechnica, as well as in numerous customer vehicles.
