Handover of the 500th Mercedes-Benz Actros SLT with wear-free Turbo Retarder Clutch from Voith. L.t.r.: Wolfgang Mayr (TSB), Edwin Beitinger (TSB), Jürgen Kuchler (TSB), Julian Beitinger (TSB), Dennis Beitinger (TSB), Hans-Günter Böhm (Voith)

  • Mercedes-Benz Trucks delivered 500th Actros SLT equipped with Voith’s wear-free Turbo Retarder Clutch (VIAB)
  • The system enables sensitive starting and maneuvering even with particularly heavy loads and on difficult terrain, at constantly low operating temperatures
  • The integrated primary retarder ensures maximum braking power even at walking speed up to the traction limit and protects the brake pads

On December 11, 2020 the 500th Actros SLT heavy-haulage vehicle was handed over at the Mercedes-Benz facility in Neu-Ulm. This was also a special occasion for Voith to celebrate. All vehicles have been euipped with the wear-free integrated starting and braking system (VIAB) of the Heidenheim-based drive specialist. Recipient of the anniversary vehicle is TSB Transport-Service-Beitinger GmbH & Co. KG.

The family-owned company from Gundelfingen, Germany regularly carries out heavy transports for Voith. The components for hydropower plants or paper machines that have been transported usually weigh several hundred tons. Furthermore, the hydropower plants are often located in outlying areas and can only be reached over rough terrain. During such heavy transports, the driver often has to steer past obstacles with millimeter precision. The Turbo Retarder Clutch from Voith enables him to maneuver and start the vehicle sensitively, even at lowest speeds and particularly heavy loads, at constantly low operating temperatures.

"Our customers highly appreciate the extraordinary functions of the VIAB. No other comparable system can even come close to achieving this."
-Hanno Rexer, Global Key Account Manager at Mercedes-Benz Trucks

“The perfection in the interaction of hydraulics, electronics and mechanics allows completely new driving maneuvers. Rolling backwards in forward gear at high load and steep gradients is an unfamiliar situation even for the most experienced drivers. At this point, test drives usually become emotional. Our customers often sit at the steering wheel speechless, with a big smile and with goose bumps,” says Hanno Rexer, Global Key Account Manager at Mercedes-Benz Trucks.

The system combines turbo coupling and retarder in one hydrodynamic circuit and thus ensures wear-free starting and braking. In addition to starting, the VIAB also acts as a primary retarder. Even in difficult situations, the driver always has full braking power at his disposal because the service brake does not run hot. This increases safety and at the same time protects the brake pads of the vehicles.
