BMW Group is implementing a set of sustainability-focused solutions in the new 7 Series, targeting emissions reduction across the automotive supply chain and throughout the vehicle lifecycle. The measures focus on key components such as high-voltage batteries, structural materials, and production processes.
Next-generation battery cells and emissions reduction
The BMW i7 features sixth-generation (Gen6) battery cells produced exclusively using renewable energy. The active materials for both anode and cathode are also manufactured using renewable energy and include a share of secondary raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel.
This combination enables an approximate 33% reduction in CO₂e emissions in the supply chain compared to the previous generation of cells, highlighting the role of product innovation in improving environmental performance.
Components with secondary materials
From 2026, selected aluminum wheel designs for the BMW i7 will incorporate up to 70% secondary material. The electrolysis of the remaining primary aluminum and the wheel production processes also partially use renewable energy.
The use of recycled materials meets automotive quality standards while contributing to resource efficiency and emissions reduction in manufacturing.
Efficiency optimization during the use phase
The EfficientDynamics technology package is applied to improve overall vehicle efficiency during operation. This includes optimizations in aerodynamics, lightweight construction, rolling resistance, and energy management.
This approach reduces operational energy consumption and supports sustainability across the entire vehicle lifecycle.
Renewable energy-based production
All variants of the 7 Series are produced at the BMW Plant Dingolfing, which uses 100% renewable electricity for external supply.
The facility also incorporates on-site energy generation systems, including a photovoltaic installation of approximately 11 MWp and a biomass plant for heat generation, contributing to lower environmental impact in manufacturing.
Climate strategy and long-term targets
The BMW Group aligns its initiatives with global climate targets, committing to achieving climate neutrality by 2050. The company has defined science-based targets to significantly reduce CO₂e emissions by 2030.

Lifecycle transparency
Through its “Vehicle Footprint,” the BMW Group provides certified data on the carbon footprint of its vehicles across their entire lifecycle. This enables analysis of secondary material content and associated emissions, enhancing transparency for customers and stakeholders.
The integration of technological innovation, sustainable materials, and optimized production processes reflects the ongoing transition of the automotive industry toward more sustainable, data-driven lifecycle management.
