Hyundai Mobis has expanded its electric vehicle drive system portfolio with the development of a 160-kilowatt Power Electric (PE) system intended for broad application across mass-market EV platforms. The company stated that the system complements its previously developed 250-kW high-performance model and will be joined by a 120-kW version for compact mobility applications. The development supports the company’s strategy to strengthen its position in the automotive data ecosystem and digital supply chain for electrified vehicle production.

The PE system integrates the motor, inverter, and reduction gear into a unified drive module, functioning as the electric equivalent of an internal combustion powertrain. Hyundai Mobis stated that it has transitioned from manufacturing customer-designed PE systems to internally developing the core architecture, component design, and production technologies required for complete system integration.

Modular Architecture for Multiple EV Platforms

During development, Hyundai Mobis focused on standardizing major components including the drive motor stator, inverter, and semiconductor-based power module. The company also applied modular engineering methods intended to improve scalability across vehicle platforms.

According to Hyundai Mobis, the standardized architecture enables the same system platform to be adapted for multiple vehicle categories without redesigning the entire powertrain for each new EV model. This approach is intended to reduce development complexity and support higher-volume manufacturing as automakers expand their electric vehicle lineups.

The company stated that this differs from conventional development structures in which automakers and suppliers separately develop individual components before integrating the complete drive system.

Performance and Packaging Improvements

The newly developed 160-kW PE system delivers a maximum output equivalent to approximately 215 horsepower. Hyundai Mobis indicated that the configuration is suitable for most mass-produced electric vehicles currently on the market. Dual-motor configurations using front and rear axle installations can further increase total system output.

Although the system was designed as a universal platform, Hyundai Mobis reported measurable performance improvements compared with previous configurations. Specific power, defined as power output relative to system weight, increased by approximately 16%, while overall package volume was reduced by nearly 20%.

The company attributed these improvements to modular component integration, optimized cooling structures, and redesigned power modules using energy-efficient semiconductor technology. Hyundai Mobis also introduced new motor cooling methods intended to improve thermal management under high-load operating conditions.

Expansion of Electrification Portfolio

The development expands Hyundai Mobis’ electrification business beyond battery systems into integrated electric drive technologies. The company stated that several overseas customers have expressed interest in the newly developed systems, supporting its objective of increasing global supply contracts for electrification components.

Hyundai Mobis had previously completed development of a 250-kW PE system intended for high-performance electric vehicles. That system was engineered to improve output, motor torque, and cooling efficiency in performance-oriented applications.

The company also plans to complete development of a compact 120-kW PE system during the first half of 2026. Hyundai Mobis stated that the smaller system is designed with reduced size and weight while maintaining cost competitiveness for compact vehicles and emerging markets.

With the addition of the 120-kW, 160-kW, and 250-kW variants, Hyundai Mobis aims to establish a complete EV drive system lineup covering compact mobility platforms, standard passenger EVs, and high-performance electric vehicles.
