MINI expands safety and driver assistance across entire lineup

Safety continues to be one of the core pillars in the development of the MINI range. The numerous five-star Euro NCAP ratings achieved by the brand confirm MINI’s ongoing commitment to high standards of protection, technological integration and driver assistance.

With the current generation of models, MINI introduces an even more advanced safety concept, combining next-generation assistance systems, intelligent Pre-Crash functions and passive safety solutions designed to provide high levels of protection as standard.

Sensors, radars and cameras working together
The technological foundation of the new MINI systems is an integrated architecture that can include up to twelve ultrasonic sensors, five cameras and five radar systems. This setup supports a broad range of driver assistance and active safety functions designed to detect potentially critical situations early and, under ideal conditions, help avoid accidents entirely. Standard equipment includes Lane Departure Warning with active steering intervention, Front Collision Warning with automatic braking even during turning maneuvers and complex intersections, continuous speed limit recognition and cruise control with braking function.

All MINI models also feature the Driving Assistant package, which includes systems such as Lane Change Warning with blind-spot monitoring, Exit Warning, Rear Collision Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Warning to support reversing maneuvers.

Pre-Crash technologies for preventive occupant protection
MINI further expands its safety approach by integrating intelligent Pre-Crash functions capable of preparing the vehicle for potential collisions before impact occurs. Based on driving dynamics data, sensor information and environmental monitoring, the system identifies potentially dangerous situations and automatically activates reversible preventive measures. These include automatic closing of windows and sunroof, as well as proactive seat backrest positioning.

According to MINI, this preventive interaction further improves occupant protection both in urban driving and on longer journeys.

Partially automated driving with Driving Assistant Plus
For the MINI Cooper, MINI Aceman and MINI Countryman families, Driving Assistant Plus is available as an option. The system enables partially automated driving functions, including Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go functionality and automatic Speed Limit Assistant. Using radar and camera technology, the platform supports lane keeping, safe following distance and speed management.

On the MINI Countryman, Driving Assistant Professional adds further advanced features such as Lane Change Assistant and Active Lane Guiding. During active route guidance, the system can recommend lane changes or upcoming exits and assist the driver by adjusting speed and steering during the maneuver.

Additional features include side-collision protection during highway driving and traffic light recognition for urban environments.

Advanced parking assistance for urban environments
MINI’s technology portfolio also includes advanced parking assistance systems designed to improve precision and safety during urban maneuvers. As standard, the Parking Assistant package includes functions such as Parking Maneuver Assistant, Reversing Assistant, Active Park Distance Control and a rear-view camera. With Parking Assistant Plus, four surround-view cameras generate a 360-degree panoramic view around the vehicle. The system can be used both for highly precise parking maneuvers and for the Anti-Theft Recorder function.

Parking Assistant Professional also enables remote parking maneuvers via smartphone and the MINI App.

Passive safety: body structure, airbags and restraint systems
In addition to active safety systems, all current MINI models feature a structure designed to provide high levels of passive protection in frontal, side and rear impacts. The combination of a highly rigid body structure, controlled deformation zones and latest-generation restraint systems forms the basis of MINI’s safety concept. Depending on the model and market, vehicles may include up to nine adaptive front and side airbags. In Germany, for example, the MINI Countryman comes standard with seven airbags, including a central airbag designed to improve protection for front occupants.

The electric MINI Cooper models and MINI Aceman also feature side airbags in the second row of seats.

Advanced seatbelt systems
MINI integrates adaptive force limiters and automatic belt tensioners to optimize occupant protection in different types of collisions. In the electric MINI Cooper and MINI Aceman models, tensioners integrated directly into the seatbelt buckle are also used to improve restraint in the pelvic area. Seat Belt Reminder is standard on all seats, while the second row also benefits from force limiters and automatic tensioners.

An active hood system is also available on almost the entire MINI lineup. In the event of a collision with a pedestrian, the hood automatically lifts to help reduce injury risk.

Safety as a defining MINI characteristic
According to MINI, the integration of active safety, passive protection, Pre-Crash systems and driver assistance technologies reflects the brand’s goal of delivering high levels of protection without compromising comfort and driving enjoyment. The results achieved in Euro NCAP testing support the company’s ongoing development efforts in this area.

Additional Context: automotive safety and competitive benchmarking not included in the original release
In the premium compact automotive market, MINI competes with brands including Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, BMW and Lexus, where advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), preventive safety and passive protection are becoming increasingly important purchasing factors.

The automotive industry continues evolving toward higher levels of automation, sensor integration and predictive safety based on artificial intelligence and data fusion from radars, cameras and sensors.

The solution presented by MINI is differentiated primarily through the combination of advanced ADAS systems, Pre-Crash functions, semi-automated driving assistance and extensive standard safety equipment available across the entire product lineup.
